Shopping Cart - Payment Gateway FAQs 
A payment gateway is a link between the Payment Processor or Merchant Service Provider and a merchant's web site when an online purchase is made for goods or services. The gateway's function is to collect the purchaser's name, address, credit card number, expiration date, and confirm that the credit card has an available balance. This information must be sent through the payment gateway to a merchant bank before an authorization can be obtained to approve or decline the transaction, and payments processed into the merchant's bank account.
Yes. A payment gateway takes the place of a "card present" card-swipe terminal machine. In essence, it is a "virtual" terminal that captures a customer's card data from the merchant's Internet web site and securely sends it to a Merchant Services Provider for payment processing.
